International Men's Day 2024
International Men’s Day: Celebrating Men and Promoting Equality.
International Men’s Day was first celebrated in 1992 by Thomas Oaster in Missouri, USA, but it gained global recognition in 1999 when Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh revived the initiative in Trinidad and Tobago. He chose November 19 to honor his father’s birthday and celebrate the anniversary of a local soccer team’s success, which symbolized unity and perseverance. Over the years, IMD has grown into a worldwide event observed in over 80 countries, emphasizing six core objectives, including improving men’s health, enhancing gender relations, and promoting equality.
Why International Men’s Day Matters?
Men face unique challenges in society, from stigmas surrounding mental health to higher rates of workplace fatalities and suicide. International Men’s Day is an opportunity to bring attention to these issues while celebrating the positive contributions men make as fathers, partners, mentors, and leaders. By addressing gender-specific health concerns, fostering meaningful connections, and challenging outdated stereotypes, IMD creates a platform for greater understanding and support for men and boys worldwide.
