World Indigenous People's Day

Celebrating International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples 2023.

On this International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, we take a moment to reflect and celebrate the integral role that indigenous communities play in the world of healthcare and clinical research.

Indigenous communities, with their rich tapestry of traditions, cultures, and their holistic and symbiotic approach to health and well-being, often grounded in deep ties to the land, provide invaluable insights for modern medicine. Historically, numerous medications have found their origins in traditional indigenous remedies. From the analgesic properties of willow bark, which led to the discovery of aspirin, to the fever fighting quinine compounds derived from the cinchona tree, indigenous knowledge has continually enhanced medical research.

It's essential to recognize that while indigenous communities have contributed immensely to global healthcare, they've often been sidelined in the processes of drug development and clinical trials. Lack of representation in clinical studies can result in a significant gap in understanding the unique health needs and responses of these communities. As a global clinical research organisation, it's our duty to ensure that our research is as diverse as the population it serves.

True collaboration goes beyond just participation. It requires understanding, respect, and mutual benefit. International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples serves as a reminder of the connectedness human beings share and the rich tapestry of knowledge we collectively hold. Here's to more collaboration, understanding, and the benefits we can share in the world of clinical research and beyond.
